Oshkosh Military Museum - Oshkosh has many interesting and fun places to explore, but you might not know about a very hidden place, the Military Museum and Education Center.
This museum is the best place to learn about history from the Civil War to the present day. You will see the actual vehicles and tanks that our parents, grandparents, or maybe great-grandparents used when they served to protect freedom. You may have seen some of the cars at one of the summer parades around Northeast Wisconsin!

We contacted Dale Anderson, Museum Membership and Volunteer Marketing. We talked about what to expect when you visit, ways to pay, some history and interesting stories about the museum's exhibits. He reflected on his time in the military and even offered advice to those considering joining the military or volunteering at the museum.
Military Veterans Museum
Dale: Like many of our volunteers, I have a number of jobs to do. I am a member of the Board of Directors of the Military Veterans Museum and Education Center. I chair the Marketing and Membership/Volunteer committees. I am a docent at least one day a week on weekends. I look at the plaques we put on our museum exhibits. I inspect car parts and help with repairs.
Dale: As we neared retirement, my wife and I explored opportunities, one of which was volunteering at a military museum. After visiting several museums within a 500 mile radius, we decided that Oshkosh and MVM were our best choices.
Dale: There are currently 22 cars in the museum, including two more in off-site storage along with an extensive underground ramp. 20 out of 22 can run and several go to festivals every summer. We have vehicles from World War II to Desert Storm. Two of the most popular vehicles today are the Vietnam era gun trucks Brutus and 'Lil Brutus'.
Dale: The museum bought two autos. 11 of the cars were donated to the museum through the John Kuenzl Foundation. They also created conditions for the construction of our current building. The rest of the cars are on loan from locals.

Dale: We send cars to parades and other events about 30 miles away. Appleton Flag Day is a case in point. "Brutus" was a constant and very popular. Volunteers manage the museum's specimens, while the owners manage the loans.
Is it true that one of the museum's tanks was featured in the Disney/Marvel movie Ant-Man?
Dale: In the past, the museum had a World War II T34-85 Russian tank. That tank was featured in the first Ant-Man movie. Two years ago, the keepers of the tank asked to return it. Last we heard, it is now in storage in Door County and may eventually be taken to the Smithsonian museum in Washington, D.C.
Dale: We have many exhibits that tell the story of veterans from the Civil War to today. Over the past two years, we've made great strides in expanding and improving these shows.

Dale: We have an annual lottery where tickets are sold from October to December. Drawings are held every Thursday to borrow a gun or equivalent to purchase at Scheels. We have an annual golf tournament. There is also an annual stamp that people pay for a $1 paper dog in places like bars and restaurants. Our fundraising committee has been very successful in raising money to cover operating costs and fund future expansion.
Dale: People can donate to the museum in a number of ways. We need gift shop cashiers, museum curators, building and grounds caretakers, car and return attendants, and drivers. We have an information sheet that describes all the facilities we have.
Dale: When they come to the museum, they will be able to learn many stories about Wisconsin veterans who have served their country in the military.
Dale: After serving in the Army, I was a dairy farmer for 17 years and then worked as a public health hygienist for the Wisconsin Department of Ag for 23 years. I am now retired. I have been married for 42 years. He is married with two sons and four grandchildren.

Dale: No, I was a mechanic in a shop that rebuilt engines and starters. I like to tell people that I defended the German Gasthaus from the Russian occupation.
Dale: Joining the military can be a great experience. You are taught to work in a group and learn what kind of person you are. Military service can really help prepare them for the things they want to do later in life.
